Fibromyalgia is a common medical condition producing muscle pain and fatigue. While several medications are available to treat this disorder, lifestyle changes are necessary as well. For people who receive a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, which medication represents the best option?

The characteristic aches of fibromyalgia are debilitating – afflicted individuals may be frequently absent from work or may be unable to complete daily tasks without experiencing significant pain. This is a fairly common condition, since 1 in 50 people suffer from fibromyalgia, mostly females. Conservative treatments such as exercise and stress reduction can help symptoms, but most fibromyalgia patients are usually treated with at least one prescription medication. A commonly used type of drugs for treating fibromyalgia are antidepressants.

Can people suffering from fibromyalgia benefit from taking antidepressants? Scientists have demonstrated that they lessen fibromyalgia fatigue and pain even in those who do not suffer concomitant depression. A study showed that fibromyalgia patients were four times more likely to have their symptoms improve when they took antidepressants.

The benefits of treating fibromyalgia with antidepressants is confirmed in a new study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association. German researchers studied eighteen, high quality clinical trials and found that antidepressants are a beneficial treatment for fibromyalgia. The category of antidepressants which showed the greatest impact on general aches and pains as well as sleep-related issues is tricyclic antidepressants, a variety of antidepressant in use since the 1950’s. The more recent and more frequently utilized SSRIs are not as effective as the older tricyclic antidepressants.

The results of this study provided evidence that tricyclic antidepressants are more effective than other types of prescription medication for treating symptoms of fibromyalgia. These antidepressants offer relief from the emotional stress and sleep difficulties that plague sufferers of fibromyalgia. Lifestyle changes need to be put into practice before tricyclic medications are used despite their benefits, due to the numerous side effects present with this class of drugs.

To maintain a diet that is healthy, avoid foods that are processed and avoid sugar. A healthy diet consisting of low sugar intake and processed foods is helpful. People with this disease should avoid caffeine, particularly if they have trouble sleeping. There are those who will feel better, suffer less pain, and experience less fatigue if they meditate and undergo massage therapy. In some cases, conservative treatments can eliminate the need for drug therapy and reduce side effects.

Although a natural approach is best, when it fails to reduce symptoms, fibromyalgia patients may still benefit with a tricyclic antidepressant treatment.

At six a.m. a terrible ache in your shoulder awakens you. The choice is to stir or suffer motionless: you choose the latter. Anything to become invisible while you plan your escape. After everything you exchanged last night, is there anything left to say?

In today’s world, there’s nothing unusual about consummating a relationship an hour after introductions. We’re impatient and a tad A.D.D. Why wouldn’t we be, we’ve had excellent conditioning. The evidence is everywhere: lose 20 pounds in 10 days with two-minute rice and a five minute workout; master French in two weeks, jet to France in three hours, view digital pictures instantly; e-mail, Fed-ex, Napster. That’s what progress means, isn’t it? Ease and expediency? And the options! Why invest months dating some enigmatic Romeo only to discover that he’s about as mysterious as a pencil?

Review the modern relationship. First dates go as follows: You meet, you like, you exchange numbers, you go out. You’re wired—fear the first impression (God, you could be great together)—so you inhale a few cocktails, relax into each other’s gaze, and profess. In the haze of the moment, half becomes whole: vulnerable meets nurturing, responsive greets lonely. Sure you can trust each other—you’re soul mates, right? You go home, fall into each other’s arms, and wake up in a panic: The stakes have just risen. The act must be legitimized; previous “bonding” resumes.

At least while you’re in bed together.

Later, safe and alone in your apartment, you feel uncomfortable. A little twitchy, like your underwear’s too tight. You think about your date, the intimate chatter, and expect butterflies any second. They don’t come, not even one flutter. Amidst your confusion, one feeling dominates: You never want to see this person again.

What the hell’s going on?

Hello-you’re humiliated. Did you really want this guy to know about your sister’s abortion or your laxative addiction? Is it love just because you watched him pee? Doubt it. And the feeling’s mutual. But we’re junkies: Our need for stimulation is so urgent, so compulsive, that we accelerate around the hairpin turns this “relationship” is taking. Suddenly but inevitably, we crash, and dream lover is mangled into a deformity we can no longer bear.

So that’s it? Embarrassment? There’s got to be more to it.

Recently I read an article in talk magazine about a filming technique called “the frenzied camera.” According to author Lee Siegal, today’s filmmakers are so concerned about our lack of concentration that they refuse to count on the actors—no matter how sexually charged—to hold our interest: It’s the camera that wins the leading role. Consider those hyper flicks that entertain by way of fear, tears, and tantrums—you know, the ones you’ve forgotten by bedtime. Notice the manic perspective swaps, the smothering close-ups and breathless repetition of movement. If there’s significance behind these dazzling impressions, it’s escaped you.

Only in May 2008, did the administration finally back down from its unconditional defense of the policy. After the head of the Sexual Misconduct Office, Charlene Allen, indignantly resigned earlier that month, the administration was forced to go public with their attempts to revise the policy in secret.

Although Allen herself has not talked to reporters about resigning, students close to her told the Columbia Daily Spectator that she said in a private meeting with them that she was deeply upset by administrator attempts to change the policy without student input.

Among the changes: accused may watch all hearings over closed circuit television, the complainant explicitly bears the burden of proof, and the standard of evidence used in determining guilt is set just below the criminal standard.

Following a slew of national coverage, Columbia received a flood of mail from alumni, college professors, and outraged individuals. Vice President of Columbia’s Office of Public Affairs, Alan Stone, responded with a form letter that read in part: “Accused students have the right to written notice of the charges. They have a right to a hearing where they can present any evidence in their defense. They have a ‘full’ opportunity to rebut the evidence – which means adequate time to respond.”

Even though Stone asserts that the Wall Street Journal editorial was “not accurate,” he fails to contest claims that accused students do not have the right to confront their accuser, cross examine witnesses, or have an attorney present during trial. Also distinctly absent from Stone’s letter, and any written defense penned by the student activists who wrote the policy, was assurance that the burden of proof was specified—that accused parties need not be required to prove their innocence.

The University Counsel, Patricia Catapano, chalks up all the newspaper print about FIRE’s (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) concerns to its “misinterpretation of what the policy said.” She claims, in all University proceedings, “There’s no question who bears the burden of proof. It’s always the complainant.” As to the newly discovered standard of evidence, Catapano said that it would be “the highest standard below criminal,” adding, “There was no intention to make it the criminal standard.”

One wonders why Catapano did not use the opportunity to correct these alleged ambiguities when FIRE wrote the University on August 1, 2000, or perhaps why Stone failed to include this in his list of rights students are guaranteed in all disciplinary proceedings at Columbia. Only until after the ambiguities and defects were highlighted in the national media, and after their hired gun resigned, was this alleged misinterpretation unveiled.

In fact, a simple “clarification” from just one administrator during the Senate hearings might have settled some of the most serious concerns of the policy’s critics, who feared, in the absence of any clear burden of proof, whether the standard of evidence employed might consequently be guided by the ever changing emotional whims of the judges hearing the case.

While Columbia searches for a new person to head-up the Sexual Misconduct Office, the Director of Student Services will occupy the position. At a May 9 meeting with students, joined by Catapano and Stone, temporary head J. J. Haywood told an audience of students that after the Wall Street Journal editorial, “the trustees became interested and wanted to make sure everything was fair.” She then admitted, “These changes were … not really communicated to students.”

Catapano was adamant about calling the “changes” Haywood mentioned mere “clarifications,” adding “We really haven’t changed what’s in the policy.” Conveniently, because the clarifications do not “go against the meaning of the Senate,” according to Catapano, a new vote on the Senate floor will not likely be required.

One may speculate that Columbia kept the entire community in the dark for an academic year about well-publicized, genuine worries to sustain the acquiescence of the SAFER (Students Active for Ending Rape) activists who threatened to take over buildings in response to Allen’s resignation. And lastly, if the University is simply clarifying what was always understood, one must sincerely marvel as to why Charlene Allen, the head of the very office charged with enforcing the policy, felt the need to resign over what was seemingly ambiguous even to her.

Although due process remains an uncertainty at Columbia, the widespread dissemination of information related to this fierce assault on civil libertarian values appears to have inhibited other schools from following in Columbia’s footsteps. SAFER had planned on establishing a national organization to help students at other schools pass similar policies. They are still moving forward with such efforts, but are doomed for failure.

At New York University, students began organizing within several months of the policy being adopted at Columbia. Since the public outcry over Columbia’s policy, however, NYU administrators have firmly stated they will not be modeling their sexual misconduct policy after Columbia’s, saying, “Our policy is aimed at preserving the rights of both the accuser and the accused.”

At George Washington University, the faculty rejected a similar sexual misconduct policy, voting 15 to 0. The policy at GW was slightly different, which might account for the relative submission by Columbia professors: under the GW policy, the faculty as well as students could be held culpable by the kangaroo courts.

Laetrile was used to treat cancer very effectively and was tested in the 1970’s by the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute’s Dr Kanematsu Suguira and found to be the most effective treatment he had seen. The pharmacartel did not want this information to be made available to the public and proceeded to retest and retest until they finally warped the tests so much that they eventually found a test that would show it didn’t work. This test was then used to make laetrile illegal in the United States………….now how about that?????? How many millions have died (been killed) since the 1950’s? Even now, today the FDA (Federal Drugs Administration) is closing down centres in the USA that are able to treat cancer: ‘parents were weeping outside the clinic because they knew their children would die (be killed) without the treatment BUT THE PHARMACARTEL PROFITS WERE AT RISK!!

It’s possible that stained teeth are not entirely your fault.

When you consume foods and condiments that are rich in pigments, it can cause your teeth to stain. Some examples of these foods are berries and cherries, other dark fruits, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, and curry. The pores of your teeth will open if you eat acidic foods. When this happens, your teeth will stain easily.

Drinking certain liquids, like coffee, tea, and red wine can cause staining of the teeth. Remember that anything that will discolor a white T-shirt may also discolor teeth. Keep a look out for very hot or very cold liquids. Changing the temperature of teeth causes them to expand and contract. This permits more staining to occur more easily.

Of course, smoking contributes to stained teeth. Nearly all of the discoloration caused due to smoking can be removed if you see to it in the beginning, but as time passes, the staining goes deeper into the enamel and then becomes harder to remove. Smoking will stain your teeth in the long run.

Chewing Tobacco: Individuals who chew tobacco sometime have brown or black stains on the enamel. The stain is seen more on the bottom teeth where the tobacco is kept.

Bad Dental Hygiene: Brushing, flossing, lack of regular dental check-ups and cleanings will help in keeping your teeth strong and white.

Brushing Too Much: What? Can people really brush their teeth too much? Yes, of course. When you brush to much with an abrasive toothpaste using a hard bristle brush, you will brush the enamel off your teeth. You should know that most whitening toothpastes are quite abrasive. When this happens the dentin shows. This has a yellow coloration, which shows through. For this reason, dentists advise the use of soft bristle brushes.

Illness and Medications: When you take medications like acne treatments, antihistamines, arthritis medications, and antidepressants, it can cause your teeth to become discolored. This is especially true of long term use.

Discoloration can be caused by some antibiotics such as doxycycline and tetracycline. Younger children are more at risk of this.

There can be a discoloration of teeth as result of chemotherapy.

Teeth can be stained by mouthwashes that contain the chemicals cetylpyridinium chloride or chlorhexidine.

Aging: As people get older, their teeth show more stains. The enamel also becomes thinner through wear and tear. When this happens, the dentin layer of your teeth shows through the enamel. This will make your teeth look dull and yellow.

Fluoride: Drinking water that contains high fluoride levels may cause tooth discoloration. This happens a lot with children who swallow their toothpaste when they brush, causing fluorisis. Chalky white patches on the teeth can be caused by fluorosis.

Genetics: Some individuals have a brighter enamel on their teeth naturally.

Injury: A very hard hit may lead to nerve problems, which in turn may discolor a tooth. Although whitening lightens the tooth temporarily, it really needs to be seen by a dentist.
